Filtration of post-clarification water in sewage treatment plants

Post- clarification water contains a large number of undissolved organic substances and particles that can have a significant impact on the operational safety and efficiency of downstream system components. Reliable filtration is therefore essential to ensure sustainable water treatment and to reuse the treated water as process water.

GEFA backwash filters offer a proven solution for municipal sewage treatment plants by efficiently removing impurities through single or multi-stage filtration processes. Whether for the protection of UV reactors, grit traps or screening systems - our filter systems make a significant contribution to extending maintenance intervals and reducing operating costs. The treated medium can also be used as process water for cleaning outdoor facilities.

Find out how our filtration solutions can help to sustainably optimize the performance and operational reliability of downstream components.

Medium: Post-clarification water and its challenges in sewage treatment plants

Our backwash filters are also designed for the filtration of post-clarification water. The systems have been used in many sewage treatment plants and contribute to reliable and safe operation.

Task: Efficient filtration for the treatment of post-clarification water

The filtration of the post-clarification water serves several processes. Treatment of the post-clarification water and protection of the UV disinfection (tube coating) for use as process water:

  • Protection of downstream system components such as thickeners, grit traps and screens against particles. Coarse pre-stages of the ACF series can be used from 0.25 - 5.0 mm. Downstream backwash filters can be used from 80 - 500 µm (standard M100 series) or 50 - 800 µm (stainless steel FW series).
  • Reduction of solid, suspended and undissolved organic substances to extend the maintenance intervals of UV systems and the tubes used.

Solution: GEFA backwash filters from the M100, FW and ACF series

Our backwash filters offer numerous advantages when used in sewage treatment plants such as single solutions or multi-stage in series:

  • Robust construction: Compact design for easy integration into existing systems.
  • High-quality materials: Manufactured as standard in steel with epoxy resin coating (M100 series) stainless steel 304 = 1.4301, stainless steel 316L = 1.4404 (FW or ACF series). Other material options on request.
  • Flexible separation sizes: 80 - 500 μm (M100 series), 50 - 800 μm (FW series) and 250 - 5000 µm (ACF series). Others on request.
  • Protection of UV systems: GEFA backwash filters from the M100 or FW series with a separation size of 50 - 100 μm are suitable for removing solids and organic substances, which achieve a significant reduction in tube fouling.

The series can be offered in many nominal sizes depending on the solids content and separation sizes used:

Implementation: Safe reprocessing and high operational reliability

The filtration of post-treatment water offers several advantages:

  • Effective removal of particles in the selected separation size, which significantly improves the quality of the treated process water
  • Ensuring the operational safety of downstream components in the system, including solenoid valves and UV reactors
  • Long-term protection for the entire system through reliable reduction of the solids content
  • Cost savings by using the filtered water as process water
